Quesnel Family Genealogy Forum

I am planning a trip to St. Louis Missouri and surrounding area in November, and as I educate myself, I’ve become intrigued with the French history of the area. I recall an earlier thread on this site regarding Michel Quesnel, son of Michel-Antoine that left Canada and was in St. Louis as early as 1790 (based on his marriage record in St. Louis). Out of curiosity I did some searching to see if there were any other Quesnels in the area during it’s early settlement. In searching a genealogy site for the area I was forwarded to a rootsweb page with the name of Marie Louise Quesniel. (I assume this is a misspelling). Here’s the link: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=thomass&id=I17565 The information indicates she was born in 1727 in Kaskaskia, Randolph Co, Illinois (near St. Louis) and married to Etienne Adrian Govereau, born April 3 1713 in Quebec. They were married Jan 12, 1750/51 in Kaskaskia, Ill and had one child together, and she died shortly thereafter. Another search for the couple on rootsweb shows Marie-Louise’s father as Raymond Quesnel (spelled Raimond here). http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:524180&id=I1341 This page includes a note that reads as follows: On February 8, 1752, Raimond Quesnel, artisan, Etienne Govereau, master smith and Marie Louise Quesnel his wife sold a house and lot in Kaskaskia to Antoine Valentin De Gruy Verloins Dumenil Fourchard de la Folie, all of Kaskaskia, Illinois for 100 minots of salt. The property having been inherited from Marie and Raimond’s late parents. A receipt for payment in full is dated January 29, 1753. This indicates that Marie Louise had a brother named Raimond perhaps living in the area as well, and that her parents died here. Does anyone have any information on this family? There weren’t that many Quesnels in the new world in the early 1700’s. The only Raymonds in my information are Raymond Quesnel, born 1697, son of Olivier and Catherine Prudhomme, married to Jeanne Hadecoeur/Deniau, and their son Raymond born ~1717. While the dates are in the ballpark, it’s certainly not clear if these are the same people. I don’t have a death or burial location for the elder Raymond or his wife to see if they were buried in Illinois or Missouri. There is a record for their son Raymond, but I haven’t found a record of any other children. My records show that their son was married to Marie Anne Boulet in 1747 in Montreal, and later married to Angelique Malidor (location unknown). At least two of his children were born in Montreal in 1753 and 1767. Because of these records, it seems unlikely that he was living in Illinois, (at least full-time) and unlikely that this is the right family. However, by my interpretation of the note, it doesn’t explicitly indicate that the son Raymond lived in Illinois, just that he was a beneficiary of the parent’s property, so it might be possible (however unlikely) that he returned to Montreal, while his family stayed in Missouri/Illinois. Does anyone have any ideas or information about this family in Illinois, or any more specific information about Raymond b. 1697, and his family that would discredit the possibility that they moved to Illinois/Missouri in the early 1700’s. Now that my curiosity is piqued, I would appreciate any possible help on this matter. One other tidbit. While Marie-Louise is a quite common name, children were often given family names. The elder Raymond had a sister Marie-Louise, so if he had a daughter Marie-Louise this might account for it. The younger Raymond also had a daughter Marie-Louise even though that wasn’t the name of his mother, or either of his wives.
Thanks for any input,
Matt Quesnell
