Hello Ken. By good fortune I also live in Victoria and have connections to IOM QUAYLE, though I have to go back 5 generations to reach it. Yes, you are right about the IOM connection for the name QUAYLE. It's a very ancient Manx surname. My surname is also IOM but I'm 4 generations away from there, as my Gelling family moved to Liverpool ca 1835. They then came here in 1910.

The BC Archives has put all their BMD records on-line, thanks to a very progressive group of people there. All births more than 100 years ago, marriages more than 75 years (1928) and deaths more than 20 years (1983) are listed. Go here and just follow their instructions: http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual/governmt/vstats/v_events.htm Or just look up "BC Archives" + "Vital Stats" on Google and it should pop up first on the list.

I looked up QUAYLE and it listed 14 BC marriages and 33 BC deaths. I also did a second test for just Victoria and it was a much shorter list as you'd expect. The only Charles Quayle was a death of Charles James Quayle in Victoria 1914-10-14 age 32. That seems too long ago, unless you know he died at a very young age and was born ca 1882.

Another source is the Victoria or BC Directories in the Victoria Public Library. They have them for most years, and you can follow their whereabouts. I've also used newpaper accounts at the Archives to find obits, marriage notices, and birth notices, but it helps to know the year. I found my great-grandmother's death that way, with the only clue that my mother vaguely remembered my dad telling her his grandmother had died, very shortly after they first started dating. She told me approx when, and I did a long search and found it. That was 20 years ago, and I now have her back many generations in England. It brought her back to life to go with the only picture we have.

Good luck. Let me know how you make out
Eric.
