Hi, I don't know much about the Quattlebaum ancestors who were African-American, but I have heard that many slaves took the last names of their owners. I have two things which might help you. One is the slave narrative I found on ancestry.com about the SC 'Jim Quattlebaum' slave who talked about his experience living as a slave with that family. If you don't belong to ancestry.com, I think you can have a free trial week by going to their website or if you email me, I have placed the narrative in a folder for my own interest, and I could send it to you. There are hundreds of slave narratives on that website on many family names. I was happy to see that the above Quattlebaum slave talked about his treatment, and was relieved to see that he was happy. Even though my Quattlebaum ancestors were not in SC at that time, and owned no slaves, I am still interested in anything having to do with the Quattlebaum family. I do know that a searcher told me that one Quattlebaum family in Ala. had slaves, and when the Yankees came, they burned the house and tried to burn the barn. The former slaves and owners survived the war by eating the burned corn from the barn. By making this letter available to everyone to read on gen.com, there might be someone else who has information which could help you decide which family might be slave owners in the area you mentioned. Please feel free to email me, and let me know what you think, or if you would like my folder. Sincerely, Rebecca.Hein@sbcglobal.net Notify Administrator about this message?
