I have a Joseph Quarterman in my line that was born in England on 11 Apr 1812 and died 8 Jul 1895 near Brunswich, GA and is buried in the Quarterman Cemetery at the old Quarterman homestead. We don't know where in England he originated but was told he had 2 brothers. The family legend states that Joseph stowed away on a ship to America when he was around 12-14 yrs. old after receiving a "beating" from his mother. I've heard both of the following: 1)that another brother stowed away with him and another came later and 2)he stowed away alone and 2 brothers came later. Either way, I've been told that the ship's captain took a liking to him, made him a cabin boy, and gave him some land in GA when he got older.
Does any of this sound familiar to you?
