Donald,

I have clearer information on the Varlet family, plus a few questions.

Nicholas Varlet (the first) was born considerably earlier than 1590. If you have a place of birth for sure, I would appreciate to know what it is, and where you found it.

According to Pieter Varlet (their youngest son), "Nicolaas Varlet & Francina Jacobs, my father and mother, were married in the year 1590, the 12th of January in Cologne." (Pieter Varlet et al, "Aantekening der familie der Varletten: 1627-" in Drents Archief). Pieter kept very good records of his family members til he died. But he said nothing about where his parents were originally from. He had been only seven years old when his father died.

Nicholas Varlet died 18 December 1605 in Cologne, and was buried at the Geusenkerkhof, outside Cologne. ("Aantekening der familie der Varletten").

Francijna Jacobs died 19 October 1612, in Wesel, at the age of 53. ("Aantekening der familie der Varletten").

Caspar Varlet was born about 1593. He married Judith Tentenier on 17 October 1615 in Utrecht, Netherlands. Marriage record says: "Caspar Verlet, from Ceulen, residing at the Voldersbrugge; with Judith Tintenier, from Ceulen, residing Groensteegh" (Utrecht). [ONA Utrecht, Huwelijken hervormd 1611-1617 file 91p264]

I believe the "(10th Dec.1651)in New York" date you have under Caspar Varlet represents the date of Jannetje Varlet's marriage to Augustine Herman, in the Dutch Reform Church of New Amsterdam.

Catrijna Varlet (daughter of Nicholas and Francijna Jacobs) was born about 1595, and died on 18 May 1652. She was buried on 22 May 1652 in the Heiligesteegskerk, in Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands ("Aantekening der familie der Varletten"). Her husband was Severijn HACK, that is correct. Subsequent children of theirs were born and baptized in Amsterdam. But Catrijna Varlet was never anywhere near Evergreen (CEMETARY) in Accomack county,Virginia.

If you have a firm marriage record for Catrijna Varlet (daughter of Nicholas) and Severijn Hack, or a baptism or birth record for their son, Joris Hack, please may we see the record(s) and the source(s)??

Catherina Varlet, daughter of Caspar, was baptized on 22 June 1636 in Nieuwe Kerk of Amsterdam. [Stadsarchief Amsterdam: doopregister, akte 7p92]. THIS Catherina Varlet married Francois de Bruyn, and the marriage record appears in records of New Amsterdam Dutch Reform Church, having taken place about September 1657. They were probably not married IN New Amsterdam.

Anna Varlet (daughter of Caspar) was probably born, most likely about 1624, in Utrecht, Netherlands, before the family moved to Amsterdam. It was one of her younger sisters, Catherina Varlet, who was born in 1636 (see above). This Anna Varlet married Joris HACK, son of Severijn HACK and Catherijna Varlet. She died before 8 July 1685, when her will was proved in Accomack County, Virginia. her second husband was Nicholas BOOT, a widower.

Will abstract:
Bote, Ann - Adm. her est. to Geo: Nicholas Hack & Peter Hack, sons of sd Ann. 8 July 1685.
Stratton Nottingham: Wills and Administrations, Accomack County, Virginia, 1663-1800, p 20.

A very nice monument to the Hack family was erected by descendents, in Evergreen Cemetary, Accomack County, Virginia, in the 1920's or so. Some info on that monument was later proved to be erroneous.

Thanks very much & Best wishes,
Liz Johnson, co-author of the translation of the "Aantekening der familie der Varletten" and other articles about the Varlet family.
