Gregory,
Jonas Qualls of Johns Island is my g-g-g-grand father. While he was married to my g-g-g-grand mother Rose, he fathered several children, including my g-g-grand father Augustas.
Augustas Qualls married Lydia Capers and fathered my great grand father Jesse, the father of my grand mother Evelina Qualls Rampersant.
During the 1870 Jonas married Moll with whom he had several more children.
I've been able to find information on Jonas' childern, but very little on him,
Although I have found records that describe Jonas' children as "light brown" (indicating possible mixed race), and the 1900 Census describe Augustas as "mulatto" but no records that describes Jonas as anything other than "negro or black".
