Asa M. Denson - Franklin Co., IN
Looking for any information on Franklin Co., IN regarding the Quaker religion and migration. My Asa M. Denson b. ca 1796 is my brick wall. On 1850 census he states he was born in NC - 1860 states born in TN and in 1880 5 of his living children state he was born in IN (this would have been OH territory in 1796). Asa was married in Franklin Co., IN, at the courthouse in Brooksville, in Nov. 1815, to Sarah Cantrell. The marriage was certified in Jan. 1816. A Woody Cantrell gave Asse Denson marriage license in Nov. 1815. Have found no other Densons in IN or OH terr. in this time period. A James Denson b. ca 1813 IN, lived with Asa on 1830 TN census and settled nearby 1840-1880 Jackson Co., TN. This James states in 1880 census that his parents were born in SC. We had assumed this James was Asa's son by a previous marriage, but now believe he was a brother or nephew. He named a son Asa M. Denson, so we know there was some relation.
The original Densons who came to America in 1600's were Quakers. Was there a settlement of Quakers who came to Franklin Co., IN in this timeframe? Would Quakers come to a new territory by themselves and possibly marry in a courthouse for lack of having their own church. Asa and Sarah moved to White Co., TN on 1820 census. Settled in Jackson Co. TN 1830-60. They never owned slaves nor did their many descendants. During Civil War all fought on Union side execpt for 1 who went a.w.o.l. immediately. Can anyone help?
Any clue or help would be so greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Carolyn Denson
