I visited the Friends Historical Collection at Guilford College this week, and I ran across some information on Dunn's Creek. The following information is taken from one of the classics on Southern Quakerism, "Southern Quakers and Slavery: A Study in Institutional History," by Stephen B. Weeks, PhD., originally published by The Johns Hopkins Press of Baltimore in 1896.
"About the same time [1740's], a monthly meeting was established at Dunn's Creek, probably either in Cumberland or Bladen County.Richard Dunn was probably the founder and leader in the settlement. Its connection was at first with the Eastern Quarter, for in 1746 Thomas Nicholson and others visited it as a committee of the Eastern Quarterly Meeting to quiet some troubles there. Some of these settlers had come from Pennsylvania, and they had a meeting-house as early as 1746.It was joined to the new Western Quarter by North Carolina Yearly Meeting in 1760.It was at this time, perhaps, half as strong financially as Cane Creek or New Garden. It did not prosper from this time, and was laid down in 1772, the first monthly meeting to be laid down within the limits of North Carolina Yearly Meeting. In 1781 the meeting for worship disappears also." (page 102)
William Reckett/Reckitt and companions visited this meeting after visiting Carver's Creek, in 1756/7,He stated they "'then went to Dan's [Dunn's] Creek, where we found another gathering of such as call themselves Friends, but had been much hurt, and scattered in their minds from the true shepherd, by an enemy that had sown tares.'" (page 91 of Weeks)
According to a history of Cane Creek MM, they became actively involved in supporting and encouraging Dun's Creek, after they were joined to the Western Quarterly Meeting. It is possible that the minutes of Cane Creek may contain some information on Dun's Creek during the years from 1760 to the 1770's.I do not know the exact location of Dun's Creek, but it was said to have been located on the Cape Fear River.I have assumed that their minutes were lost, but I do not know for sure.I will be returning to Guilford College in the future. If someone wants to call them and ask about the existence of minutes of various small meetings in the area that were not in Hinshaw, they can call the Friends Historical Collection at (336) 316-2264.The main library number (the Friends Historical Collection is inside the college library) is 316-2450.They are limited in staff, and they have limited hours when they are open.
