Cindy - Thanks.Yes, I agree with what you say about the Confusin' Hughes of Cape May!Uriah Hughes, c. 1709 - c.1758 was the son of Humphrey Hughes 1669-1744 and Mary (Brandiff?), and brother of Humphrey Hughes 1702-1742 (m. Bethia Crowell), Elijah 1708-1762 (m. Hannah Stites), Judith 1714-1747 (m. Jacob Spicer) and Martha 1712-1745 (m. Matthias Fithian).Uriah married Mary Whilldin, dau of Joseph Whilldin abt 1741, who died bef 1747Two children, Ellis and Judith.Ellis married his first cousin Mary Whilldin, dau of James Whilldin.Frequently confused with his cousin of Cape May, Ellis Hughes the patriot, and with the unrelated Quaker Ellis Hughes of Exeter and Catawissa, Pennsylvania.
Ellis and Mary moved from Cape May to Catawissa, Pennsylvania some time after the Revolution with 6 of their 7 children. His will dated August 1800 names his children - Philadelphia (m Gabriel Lount), Uriah (m Mary Polly Pancoast), Judith (m Salathiel Foster and stayed in Cape May), Issachar (m. Naomi Dodd), Theophilus (m. Lydia Westcott), Mary (m. John Cleaver) and Ellis (m. Mary Polly Foster).
The children spread far and wide - Philadelphia, Mary and Ellis ended up in Ontario.Uriah in Steuben, New York, Theophilus in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Issachar in Essex, NJ.Judith stayed in Cape May.
Judith Hughes 1744-1774 married Joseph Pritchard in Philadelphia.
The last trace I found of Uriah Hughes (1709-1758) is the sale of the land in Fishing Creek, Lower, Cape May in 1758.He seems to have died before his son Ellis married Mary Whilldin on Oct 2, 1861.Probably a mariner, he does not appear in census, church or cemetery records in Cape May but continued to own the 50 acres he inherited from his father until 1758.
