Futhey and Cope say, in THE HISTORY OF CHESTER COUNTY PA, that a Charles (d. 1732), of East Nottingham m Jane, dau of Evan Powell, of New Garden, and were, apparently the progenitors of the Gause family."The name is generally written Goss in the old records, and it is believed to have been os spelled by the family."The name spellings seem pretty interchangable in the Chester Co records, with the same idividual listed various places with both spellings.
The following is Charles' will, under the name Goss;
Pennsylvania Wills, 1682-1834
GOSS, CHARLES. E. Nottingham.March 21, 1731/2. June 1, 1732. A. 374.Father in law Evan Powell to have all estate and take care of wife and children who are not named, also executrix.
Witnesses: Elisha Gatchell Sr, John Boggo.
I can't imagine monthly meeting records including why someone "changed' their name spelling! (if it is, in fact, true, please post it on the form, will you....I, for one, would be really interested.)It seems to me to be just another of those names that the record keepers may spell differently, perhaps due to the pronunciation..... of course the only way to know how an individual actually spelled his name is to see his signature, something more rare than hens' teeth, I'm afraid.
