Quakers (Copeland) who married Native Americans - Kansas/Indiana?
hi
My great grandmother was Samantha Jane "Nancy" Finney. She married Abner Copeland. The family legend was that she was half or part Native American, and that she was so tough that many of her sons left the farm.
She was born in Clinton, Vermillion, KS. Abner came from North Carolina.
The legend said that a Copeland who was a Quaker, was sent (by President Grant after the Civil War ended in 1965) to replace the 'thievin' Indian agents, and he fell in love with an Indian woman and married her.
In the family this would make sense, because their first child was born in 1868.
Does this legend sound familiar? That would have to mean Samantha and all her siblings were half or part Native American - and possibly had different parents than Wesley Finney and Mary Mathilda Hinshaw.
My Grandfather told people he was Native American, and my uncle was called a Dumb Okie Injun. My father, however, looked like his Scots mother.
Would love to clear up this mystery - and would love to hear from anyone else with similar stories or heritage.
Ideas anyone? Thanks - Cousette Copeland - [email protected]
