General question--child omitted from MM records

A probable relative was a member of the Henrico VA Monthly Meeting. The records in Hinshaw's Encyclopedia list his children and their birthdates, but one child is omitted. This child was still living during the years covered by the record. Does anyone know a reason for not mentioning a child? Could it be that this child was born of a mother who was not a Quaker or that this child was disowned, living with a non-Quaker relative or otherwise not considered a part of the membership of the Society? Put another way, was the list of children intended to be a record of all births or a list of children who were actually members or members-to-be?
