Quakers were prodigious record keepers, which is very helpful to anyone researching Quaker ancestors. Here's how it works....if a person is a member of one meeting, regardless of where it is - the next county over, or another country...when he wishes to transfer to another meeting....next county over or another country.....he must take a certificate with him, that says, more or less, that he is a member in good standing of his old meeting. Then, when he moves and joins the new meeting, most generally his name is entered in the records of the new meeting, with this sort of notation; 1m 23, 1710 Jonathan rocf New Garden pa meeting (which means that on the date given, Jonathan was received into whatever meeting records you're looking at, and he presented a certificate from the New Garden Pa meeting. If the record says "1m 23 1710 Jonathan Smith rec...then that means that he was received as a member on that date, as a new Friend, and not one transferring from another meeting In the way it is possible to track an ancestor, by seeing where he transferred from, or from the note in his old meeting, that he requested a certificate from that meeting to the new one. These are about the only times where one came from and where one moves to are recorded in the records of a MM. So, it there is nothing in the Arch Street meeting records, about where he came from, then I wouldn't know what his previous meeting was. It wouldn't be included in any meeting records AFTER Arch...only at Arch, or before. In case you don't have it...Silas' will; Pennsylvania Wills, 1682-1834 PRYOR, SILAS.
