David Quail senior was Born on 10 Feb 1877 in Wavertree Liverpool Uk, the son of George Quail b 13 Nov 1849 Liverpool and Mary Ellen Noble. George was a Chartered accountant and David had one living sibling, Lilian Quail, later Mountford who emigrated to St Paul Ramsey Minnesota in 1914 with her two children after the early death of her husband [Joseph Rathbone Mountford] in 1909 in Liverpool. Quail is a name originating from the Isle of man. Many Manx people crossed between the Island and the north west coast of England, to Liverpool and to Cumberland further north. David senior's paternal grand father was also called George Quail born 2 May 1815 in Whitehaven on the Cumberland coast [he married Mary Holt b 1824 from Rochdale in Lancashire]. This George Quail was the son of a blacksmith, William Quail b 1791 in Cockermouth and Elizabeth Hamilton b 1785 in Sunderland. These were therefore David Senior's great grandparents. The Quail family moved down from Whitehaven to Liverpool between about 1816 and 1841 and settled there. They seem to have done surprisingly well financially. when David Quail senior's father died on 23 May 1882 he left a personal estate of £15,085. 8s which is a huge amount of money for the day and was an oil merchant employing 63 men. My connection with the family is that George Holt [1815-1882] is the father of my Great grandmother Emily Hamilton Quail [1867-1941]. David Quail Senior is her nephew. I'd be very interested to hear of your American side of the family. Notify Administrator about this message?
