William Pywell of Castor

William Pywell married Sophia Parker on 4 May 1803, Castor, Northamptonshire. They had 15 children and are ancestors of many modern Pywells. William died in 1849 and was buried at Castor on 17 September 1849, said to be 73 years old. The 1841 census shows him resident at Castor and about 60 years of age.

New information from Alan Clarke's index of baptisms in Northamptonshire 1750-1812 suggests that we can now identify William's parentage. He is almost certainly the William Pywell baptised 27 February 1782 at Oundle, Northamptonshire, son of William and Sarah Pywell.

The Oundle register shows his father's name as William, but it should read John. If this is correct, then William Pywell of Castor is the eldest son of John Pywell who married Sarah Loveden at Oundle on 7 May 1781. Sarah was buried at Oundle on 31 July 1811, and John was buried there on 12 November 1839. They had six children: William, John, Thomas (died young), Thomas, Susannah and George.

John Pywell was baptised at Oundle on 29 June 1755, son of William and Hannah Pywell. His father William married Hannah Lambeard at Oundle on 3 November 1754. Hannah was buried at Oundle on 17 June 1758. William remarried Anne Eyre at Oundle on 21 November 1762, and died and was buried at Oundle on 18 April 1783.

This gives the following ancestry:
William Pywell (1782-1849) = Sophia Parker
John Pywell (1755-1839) = Sarah Loveden
William Pywell (died 1783) = Hannah Lambeard

William (died 1783) could be the William Pywell son of John and Sarah Pywell baptised at Weldon, Northamptonshire in 1719, or the William Pywell son of William and Dorothy Pywell baptised at St Sepulchre's Northampton in 1728, or he may be from a different family altogether.
