I have tried to collect all sorts of info on Pyne families over the years , with a general interest in the name and various branches. I too have tried to track down the roots of Thomas Salter Pyne who as you know found his way to be an emminent engineer in Afghanistan. I have tracked down various census entries for him and his family which show him to be the youngest (known) son of a John Pyne and Alice Salter. The latter two were marred in Manchester in 1859. Thomas had siblings elizabeth,b 1865 in Birmingham, Alice b1866 also Birmingham, William b 1869 in Plymouth, Annie, b 1875 and Arthur b 1880 Kidderminster. His father John was born c 1835 in Dalston in London. His jobs in the census returns were variously given as Servant, Publishers Agent, Licensed Victualler and mirror work manufacturer. Clearly he tried his hand at various trades and travelled around the country a fair bit. I have Thomas as having died in 1921 but do not have details of any family of his own. A nice quote I found about him , by a Sir Mortimer Durand is 'The more I have to do with him, the more respect I feel for his sagacity'
You might have also come across a characature of Sir Thomas which I came acros on the net.
Interested on any other details you have on him or the family my e mail is firstname.lastname@example.org
