Hello All Pynes:
I returned just yesterday (Thursday, August 21, 2003) from Ireland where I learned by browsing in a bookstore that the Pyne name officially appears in County Cork in 1599. I believe the name is of a person in an official capacity.
The name is differentiated from "Payne" but connected possibly to the French "Pin" (pronounced PINE) meaning tall thin, upright person (possibly), as in the Pine tree. Possibly of English/Protestant descent/connection but also Irish/Catholic. My mother mentioned a connection once of the Pyne name to French Royalty, but I have nothing to confirm this.
I just spent two weeks with my wife's family ( her parent's are immigrants to the US in the 1940's) in Carraroe, County Galway, where Gaelic/Irish is the primary language. Spellings/mis-spellings, and/or alternative spellings are rampant as Gaelic is certainly a different language from English.
Several of the names in the "Bridgett Pyne" thread are the same as in my own family and I was hopeful of a connection.
I am lacking in much information, but this is what I do have:
Edward (Edmund?) Pyne, b. March 1863, Fermoy, County Cork, Ireland. Md. to:
Catherine Margaret (Callaghan) Callahan, b. April 1860, in Ireland.
John Joseph Pyne, b. Nov. 1888, Broooklyn, NY; d. Nov. 30, 1959 in Quincy, MA.
md. April 7, 1915 in Boston, MA to :
Elizabeth Barbara C(elia) Braun, b. Sept. 19, 1894, Jamaica Plain, MA; d. May 20, 1944, Quincy, MA.
(These are my maternal grandparents)
continuing children of Edward & Catherine...
David Pyne, b. April 1887;
Edward G. Pyne, b. Feb. 1896;
Maurice Thomas Pyne, Jan. 2, 1891
Catherine Pyne, Nov. 1899
Margaret Mary "Margie" Pyne, b. Feb. 24, 1893
Also: I am not sure who, but I have heard that there is an ancestor Pyne of Fermoy, County Cork, who was conscripted into the British Army at the local garrison/barracks and consequently served in India.
Of course, thank you all VERY MUCH if anyone can make any connection here at all, as I have NO specific data on who left Ireland when and where to arrive when and where in America.
