Bonnie:

I've done much research on this Pyeatt line. My husband's half-sister is a descendant of James and Catherine (Finley) Pyeatt through their son Peter Paulus Pyeatt, who was born in Warren Co., Kentucky in April 1803. I would like to clarify some things in this book:

1. Jacob and James Pyeatt, along with their wives, sisters Margaret and Catherine Finley and probably brother-in-law Michael Finley, left Guilford Co., NC around 1797 and relocated to Warren Co., KY. The last Guilford Co. deed showing Jacob Pyeatt as grantor was recorded in a Guilford Co. deed book in 1800, where it states that he is "of Warren County Kentucky.". The Pyeatts remained in Warren Co. until about 1809, when they relocated (unbeknownst to them) on Indian lands in northern Alabama, along with many others, which became known as Sims's settlement. An excellent history exists on this settlement, written by Ruth Priest Dixon, called "Sims Settlement: Our Squatter Ancestors."

I have found no evidence at all that Jacob or James was ever in South Carolina. Their older brother Peter Pyeatt lived there for many years, marrying twice but leaving no issue and has documented Revolutionary War service from North Carolina. He died testate in Charleston, SC in 1818.

2. The part about the migration to Arkansas is true, but it occurred after the group was evicted by federal forces from those Indian lands in northern Alabama, about 1811, after their petition to remain there was denied.

The Pyeatts and Carnahans intermarried quite a bit. One interesting tidbit is that Cumberland Presbyterian exhorter John Carnahan baptized James and Catherine Pyeatt's infant daughter at their home in Crystal Hill (Arkansas) in 1813.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

Nancy
