I am looking for a female granddaughter to Gen. Israel Putnam who married a ? Harris. She either lived at the farm at Pomfret, Connecticut or the Putnam home in Salem, Mass. (maybe both). The couple had many children, mostly girls. There was a young boy, Jack Harris, born in 1840 (Pomfret(?),Conn). Ran away to sea at the age of 12 (1852). He joined William Walker's Nicaragua Expedition, recruited in San Fransisco, in either 1855 or 1856. He was captured by the locals and was going to be executed but William Walker saved him. Jack left Nicaragua and came to Texas in 1860. He was a scout for the Army and then joined San Antonio's police dept. He served with the Confederates in Galveston along side of Ben Thompson. After the Civil War he returned to his job in San Antonio. He and Capt. Peneloza operated the Bull's Head Saloon around 1870 and by 1872 he operated the Jack Harris Saloon and the 101 Club. He acquired the Vaudeville Theater in 1874. This was the first Vaudeville Theatre (by that name) in the United States. The shooting of Jack Harris made the front page of the New York Times and the Chicago paper. On March 11, 1884, Ben Thompson and King Fisher were ambushed and killed in the Vaudeville Theatre. Again this made the front page of the New York Times. Jack Harris had a sister or neice living with him in the 1880 census. Her name was Maud Harris from Massachusetts. Again, I am looking for the connection of the Harris name married to a Putnam female (probably granddaughter to Gen. Israel Putnam. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. I have photos of the Centennial of the shooting I would be happy to supply. As an aside, Amilia Earhardt was married to a Putnam who owned the Putnam Publishing Business in New York. He helped to finance her flying career. Eagerly waiting to hear from you, Gary Yantis Seguin, Texas 830-303-9088 Notify Administrator about this message?
