Y-DNA testing Puterbaugh/Buterbaugh
Recently Elaine posted the results of two Buterbaugh/Puterbaugh descendants who have completed the Y-DNA test for 37 markers. It is most interesting as they matched 35/37 meaning that there is a 50% probability of sharing a common ancestor within 6 generations, 90% within 12 generations, and 95% within 14 generations.
The first one tested - a Buterbaugh – traces his ancestors to the documented immigrant Johan Petter Putterbach (John Peter Puterbaugh) while the second one tested – a Puterbaugh – traces his lineage back to the immigrant, George Puterbaugh who apparently has no known record of birth nor immigration.Family stories have claimed that John Peter and George were brothers who emigrated together from Germany, arriving in Philadelphia 15 September 1752.John Peter signed the Oath of Allegiance but George being under 16 years of age was not required to sign, so there is no record of his immigration.
In recent years doubt was cast on the assumption that they were full brothers.Research seemed to indicate that John Peter was born 1735 and that his father, Johann Thiel Putterbach, died that same year. The widow remarried a man with the last name of Jung.It was assumed that George was a son of the second marriage, born about 1737.
The close (35/37 markers) match casts doubts on the theory that John Peter and George were half brothers; same mother, different fathers. Before any research is discounted, however, it would be more conclusive if further male descendants from John Peter and George could be tested. And perhaps further research would clarify what information has been discovered. For instance, could the two immigrants have been cousins who had the same grandfather?
It could be helpful for other Puterbaugh, Buterbaugh, Puderbaugh, etc. descendants who are unsure of their immigrant ancestor to join the Y-DNA study started by Elaine at FamilyTreeDNA.Also I’m curious whether there are Puterbaughs, with spelling variations, who claim a different immigrant.Could they all be related?
