From what I have found in a variety of sources, Jesse was one of many children of Jesse Purvis who came to Jefferson County, GA, from Johnston County, NC. Can't tell if the older Jesse had more than one wife, but a wife is believed to be Mary Ballenger. At least 2 Purvis males had Ballenger for a middle name. (One was my great-grandfather, Edward Ballenger Purvis.) Jesse apparently died before 1820 and Mary sometime after 1820. These are who I believe were children of the older Jesse: Edward who married Nancy Young and died before 1820. They were married in 1807 in Jefferson County. She was in the census in Jefferson County through 1850. Nancy who married Daniel Beavers in 1799 in Greene County, GA. William W. who married Sarah Mathews. They were in the census in Jefferson County in 1820 and 1830. He died in 1850 in Warren County, GA. Needham who married Margaret Young. He died about 1849 in Irwin County, GA. Jesse who married Sarah Streetman in 1811 in Jefferson County and Elizabeth Godown in 1817 in Jefferson County. He was with adaughter in 1860 in the census of Jackson County, FL. Obedience who married Wiley Vickers in 1805 in Laurens County, GA. They were in Irwin County, GA. Apsabeth who married Cain Parker in 1809 in Jefferson County and Moses Ebenezer Brinson. Mary who married Jesse Connell in 1809 in Jefferson County, GA. They were in Dooly County, GA, in 1840. John who married Mary Ann Sandefur Askew, widow of Henry Ashew. They were in Dooly County in 1830 and in Stewart County, GA, in 1840 and 1850. She survived him and was in Webster County, GA, in 1850. He is believed to have been in Wilkinson County, GA, with two brothers and his mother in 1820. Bennett who married Rebecca Dominy. He was in Dooly County from 1830through 1880. He was in Wilkinson County in 1820. She died before 1860. Chesley who married Lydia Wright in 1824 in Wilkinson County. He was in Wilkinson County in 1820, in Dooly County in 1830, 1840 and 1850, in Washington County, FL, in 1860 and in Dale County, AL, in 1860. She survived him and was in Geneva County, AL, in 1870 and 1880. The younger Jesse had a son in the 1820 census of Jefferson County. I think this was David E. In the 1830 census, he had 5 daughters and 4 sons. One of the daughters was old enough to have been in the 1820 census, but was not. I have found information on 3 of the daughters. Marintha married John Grant. This is who Jesse was with in the 1860 census of Jackson County, FL. Lorenzia and Sarah were in St. John's County, FL. in 1850. I think these are 2 of Jesse's daughters. The two who fit as sons of Jesse are David E. and William, who was in Coffee County, GA, in 1860 with wife Lucinda. David and this William are the only two males who cannot be accounted for with any other parents, so I believe they were Jesse's sons. I can find no other males who could be the other 2 sons of Jesse. Notify Administrator about this message?
