Just a followup with a bit of detail on my earlier followup. On the walls of the Jedburhg Abby there is a sizable memorial that reads:

"There lies in this place the mortal remains of John Purves, L.L.D., who died in his manse here on the 18th October 1877, in the 78th year of his age and the 53rd of his ministry, 47 of these years having been spent in the exercise of that sacred office in Jedburgh."

This person is of no known relationship to me. I have the informatin because I took a photograph of the memorial because my g-g-g-grandfather was John Purves, but my John was a laborer, not a minister.
