Jennie,
The following is Message 424 posted by Frances Pursley Lewis on Nov. 22, 2001. I believe it will answer all your questions. Her email address at the time was franceslewis@email.com. Below is what she had to say.

Dawn Pursley Goodrum

Ephriam Pursley was the son of James and Jane McMahan Pursley. He was born in White Abbey, County Antrim, Ireland in 1761. At the age of 14 he enlisted as a soldier in the Revoluntionary War and served throughout the war. During this period, he lived with his parents in York District, South Carolina. In either 1788 or 1789, he married Margaret Stevenson whose family were English and had originally settled in Pennsylvania. In 1788, one Eleanor Stevenson had taken him to court claiming that he was the father of her child. Not having researched the Stevenson line, it is unknown whether Eleanor and Margaret could have in fact been the same person. In the 1790 census Ephraim had moved to Abbeville District, South Carolina.

In Abbeville District, he originally settled in the Rocky River section of the District near the Savannah River. With the early land records of Abbeville having been destroyed by fire, it is very hard to dtermine exactly where his land was. However, I(Larry Pursley, brother of Frances Lewis) did see a copy of a plat in the possession of Mr. Harold Carlisle for one Daniel Gill on the water Shanklin and McKinley Creeks whose land was bounded by Ephriam Pursley. Unfortunately, I was not as interested in the family genealogy then and did not make a copy of this land plat. Interestingly, the only appearance of Ephraim Pursley in the Probate Court Records of Abbeville is his appearnace as awitness to the will of Daniel Gill dated in 1797. Today, even this record is missing. Sometime prior to 1820, he had moved to what is now the Sharon Church area of Abbeville County. Here he died on Apr 1, 1837 and is buried along with his wife, Margaret, in an unmarked grave on this property. These graves are within one half mile of Sharon Methodist Church. Margaret Stevenson Pursley died about the year 1842. Ephraim and Margaret Pursley had (6) known children: however census records indicate that there may have been others. Known children were:

David born ca 1802. He married about 1828 to Elizabeth Harriott in South Carolina. Sometime during the 1830s he moved to Tennessee, on to Arkansas and finally to Texas. He died Feb 27, 1847 in Saltillo, Mexico while serving in the Mexica War. At least one source says he was killed in battle. His wife died Apr 4, 1873 in Pursley, Texas. The community of Pursley, Texas was named for this family.

Hiram - the year of his birth is not known. He was killed as a young man when he fell from a wagon. He never married. He lived in the Sharon Church area and his land was later sold to John Penney and became known as the Penney place. His death occurred about the year of 1838 or 1839.

Mary - She was born ca 1805. She ded Feb. 22, 1869. She never married and is buried in the Sharon Methodist Cemetery.

Elizabeth - She was born about ca 1793. She never married. She is buried at the Hodges Cemetery in Hodges, South Carolina.

Jane - She was born in 1790. Shed ided in either 1872 or 1873. She married Andrew Gillespie and they lived where the present Warrent Presbyterian Church manse is now located. She and her husband are both buried in Sharon Methodist Church Cemetery. She muyst have gone by the name of Jennie as she is often referred to by that name.

James P. - He was born in 1794. He married Nancy Agnes Richey. They lived near Sharon Methodist Church. He was afarmer and wheelwright. He died Feb 4, 1866. He and his wife are both buried in Sharon Mewthodist Cemetery.
