Dear Sir--
I can't offer you too much on Samuel M. Pursley, because he's one of the more illusive members of our family, but I can tell you he was the son of James Samuel and Sarah Quarrell Pursley and was born in the vicinity of modern day Clover, South Carolina, and he was raised in York County. He moved to Gaston County at some point (obviously), and he later married Sarah Matilda Bryson, but there is some confusion as to whether she had been married before and, therefore, whether her first husband was a Bryson or whether it was actually her maiden name. His wife or one of his children, I think, is buried at Union Presbyterian Church on Union Road in Gastonia. The Pursleys usually are Presbyterian (or Episcopal), so he is probably buried there, too.
