Hi, I'm looking to locate on ancestors or descendants of the following Purdy family: James Purdy, b. Nov. 15, 1827, Portadown, N. Ireland - d. 1917 Brunswick Cnty., VA m. May 7, 1847, Armagh Cnty, N. Ireland Jane Wells, b. Notes that I have on this family are from a photo of a newspaper article about their 58th anniversary, research into James' CSA service and from the "Famine Immigants" volume for 1847: James, Jane and Ann Purdy - Set sail from Belfast, N. Ireland aboard the ship S.S. Venice about May 21, 1847, two weeks after he and Jane were married. They arrived in New York July 29, 1847. The manifest listed James, age 20, his wife Jane, age 19, and an Ann Purdy, age 17 (his sister). From NY they traveled by boat to Philadelphia, then Baltimore, then Norfolk, then City Point (n.k.a. New Hope), then Petersburg. Traveling from there by railroad to Belfield, and from there to White Plains (or there abouts) by stage. They were preceded to Lawrenceville by James' uncle Leonard. James served in Company E, 56th Virginia Infantry during the Civil War. James was conscripted on Mar 21, 1864 and paroled as a P.O.W. about April 14th or 17th at Burkesville Junction, VA. He was a member of Brunswick Lodge #54 AF and AM. He and Jane had, as of May 1915, 21 grandchildren, and 7 ggrandchildren. Buried in Oakwood Cemetary Lawrenceville, VA. Gravestone enscription reads: James Purdy 1827 - 1917 CO E 56th VA INF Picketts Div. CSA Thanks, Todd Notify Administrator about this message?
