I purchased a family crest with a short history of the name in England about ten years ago. I'm paraphrasing, but essentially there are four theories to the name's origin. Scottish, Anglican, Welsh and French from "Pulian". Supposedly the name translates to mean meadow with a stream. The suffix "ly" or "leah" always means field or meadow in old English. Pul-li-am.
