Notes for David A. Pullen:
David A. Pullen, a well known resident of Peekskill,
died at his home, 1003 Orchard street, Sunday Evening
last, after an illness of two days only from an infeection of his stomach.
Mr. Pullen was born in Yorktown, May 14 1861, the son of Stephen Pullen
and Maria Denike. He came to VanCortlandtville, with his parents and learned
the trade of a painter and paper hanger. He worked for a number of years
with R.M. Grant; and at various times he was employed by others.
For the past eight years he had been conducting busniess for himself. He
was a good workman and was never without employment.
During his younger days Mr. Pullen was noted for his caring and for a
number of years his summers were spent travelling with a circus under
the nondeplume of Thomas Carlysle. His work was walking tight rope, and
he performed at a number of exhibitions in Madison Square Garden. At one of
the exhibitions he fell and had a miraculous escape.
He was somwhat of a gunner, and one of the trophies of his skill is the
large eagle which greets the eye of all who enter the Eagle Hotel. The bird
was shot by Mr. Pullen on the Kittredge Farm in 1882.
Mr. Pullen was a member of Peekskill Council, No. 1945 Royal Arcanum
for many years. This was his only faternal connection. He married
Miss Grace Hilliker on March 25 1894.
They have six children, four boys & two girls.
The funeral services were held from his late residence on Wednesdat
afternoon; the Rev james Mulder officiating. The interment was at
Hillside Cemetery.

George Squires was a fireman & driver for 29 years with the Peekskill Fire Department, and active in yachting circles. George Squires died at 3:45 am in the Peekskill Hospital, a few hours after being strciken at his home.
Mr. George Squires was one of the most popluar Fireman drivers in the fire department. He was educated in the Park Street School. He played baseball with several clubs in "Finktown" during his youth, playing with such noted players as,"Crackey" Holden, Ray Ferris,Joe Doyle, and Jim Doyle.
He served as a chauffeur for the Chamber Feed Co., a forerunnwe of the W.J.Owens Co.
Later on in life he took an examination for chauffeur in the Peekskill Fire Department. He worked for awhile with one of the Park Street Fire Companies. Later he was transffered to the "Dock" where he worked as a driver for Centennial Hose Company. He finally was transffered to the Truck and had continued as one of the drivers for many years.
Altogether he worked for the City of Peekskill for 29 years, having been appointed chauffeur on May 26, 1930.
He was also a member of the Peekskill Yacht Club for 17 years, having joined it in 1939. At on time he served as aboard member of the trustees. He owned 2 yachts, they were named the Lillian after is wife & the Dolphin.
Mr. Squires was also a member of the Coast Guard and the Firemens Benevolent Association.
He was a great domino player and played with the Truck teams being regarded as a most skilledful player.

ARTHUR BROWN JR.: former yacht club commodore


Arthur D. Brown Jr., a former commodore of the
Peekskill Yacht Club, died yesterday of a heart attack
at his home. He was 73.

He was born in New York City on March 14, 1915, to
Arthur D. and Hazel Pollack Brown. He moved to
Peekskill in 1932.
" His whole life was the Peekskill Yacht Club," said
his daughter, Geraldine DeRonda of Peekskill.
Mr. Brown was the clubs' commodore in the mid 1960s'.
He was also a member of the Peekskiil Fire Department,
Washington Enginr Co., No. 2.
Before retiring in 1979, Mr. Brown was a refrigeration
engineer at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Veterans
Adminstration Hospital Center in Montrose. He was a member of
the Association of Federal Employees.
During World War II, he was a refrigeration engineer for the
U.S. Nav and attained the rank of machinist mate 2nd class.
He married Mildred Squires in April 1941, in New York
City. She died June 10, 1985.
In addition to his daughter Geraldine, Mr. Brown is survived
by a son, Jeffrey David, of Peekskill: and eight grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by E.O. Curry
Furneral Home in Peekskill.

She married Robert S. Henry 10 Oct 1943. He was born 10 Oct 1919, and died 22 Nov 1994 in Swansboro, North Carolina.

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005 - HENRY, FRANCES C. (NEE SQUIRES) - HENRY, FRANCES C. (NEE SQUIRES) Frances C. Henry (nee Squires) passed away peacefully on July 18 at her home in Swansboro, NC. She was 86 years old. Mrs. Henry was born in Peekskill, NY on May 20, 1919 to George W. Squires and Lillian Pullen Squires. She was educated in the Peekskill Schools and became a beautician in Peekskill for over forty years. On October 10, 1943, she married Robert S. Henry (deceased in 1994). Together, they had one son, Robert B. Henry, also of Peekskill, who survives her. She was well known for elaborate wedding cakes. In 1970, she won third place nationwide for one of her cakes. Upon retirement, in 1982, she moved to Swansboro, NC, where she was active in many organizations. Her passion turned from cakes to arts and crafts in which she won many awards. Her other passion was spoiling her only grandson Joseph Robert (J.R.). Additional survivors include daughter-in-law Patricia L. Henry (Lellek), one brother Harold Squires of Florida and many nieces and nephews. A graveside ceremony will be Saturday, July 30, at 10 am, at the Hillside Cemetery in Cortlandt Manor. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Western Carteret Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Dolphin Street, Swansboro, NC 28584.
