I have a David Pugh with those dates in my records. David was married to Sarah Geer and his father was listed as Samuel Billings Pugh, Sr and his mother was Susannah Chamberlin. Both parents were buried in the Walter Cox Cemetery, Grassy Creek, Ashe County, North Carolina.

David and Sarah Pugh lived on the Pigg River in Franklin County, Virginia where they had (according to a 1786 Personal Property List) one child, three slaves, three horses, and five cows. In 1792 they left Franklin County and bought property on Wilson Creek in Grayson County, Virginia.

In an ironic twist of fate Sarah's life would parallel that of her great grandmother Sarah Day Greer. It seems that many years before, Sarah's great grandfather, John Greer, had fathered four children with another woman while married to Sarah's great grandmother. Sarah's husband, David Pugh, became entangled in a similar situation by fathering a child with his mistress, Nancy Minton, in Ashe County, North Carolina.

In 1806 David and Sarah separated, but apparently never divorced. A deed book dated Aug 27, 1806 records David's last act before his departure with Nancy Minton.

"Whereas: David Pew is about to travel to remote parts and has adjudged it expedient to dispose of his estate before he sets out, therefore in consideration of love and affection for his children, he grants to them and to Gaines, as trustee for his wife, all his estate, real and personal, except a negro man, his riding horse, a saddle, gun and wearing apparel which he reserves to his own use. [Family tradition says he took also a gallon of seed corn.] He wants his children paid off as they arrive at age 21 and wants Violet, Samuel, Robert, John, and Ruth to receive as good an education as the others had.

Witnesses: Alexander Smyth, Wm Ballard, George Currin and Martin Dickinson."

No one born in 1760 could have been born in Franklin County, Virginia as It did not come into existance until 1786. The area that is now Franklin was Halifax County, Virginia in 1760.

David Pugh didn't buy the property on Wilson Creek from Solomon Cox until 1792, but owned property on the Pigg River in Franklin County, Virginia.

David and Sarah Greer Pugh were reported to have been buried in the Mitchell Pugh Cemetery -- Volney, Grayson County, Virginia. This cemetery is located near the intersection of Little Wilson Creek Road and Low Gap Road. (Behind David Anderson's house on the Low Gap Road) in Wilson Creek District. The GPS:coordinates for this cemetery are 36.64434 deg. N. 81.42159 deg. W.

Samuel Pugh and family came to New River (Grayson, Virginia area) about the same time the Greers did, in the 1780s. His son David (1761-1822) married Sarah Greear, daughter of William and Sarah Freeland Greear, and the young couple had eight children born from 1785 to 1801. In a land transaction David Pugh is identified as being from Franklin County, Virginia; on 01 May 1792 he bought 330 acres on Wilson Creek in Wythe County, from Solomon Cox; witnesses were Enoch Osborne, Shadrach Greer, and Samuel Cox. Although this purchase is in Wythe, all the men involved were settlers in Grayson, so the location was close and it is known the Pughs lived in the Grayson area.

I do not have information about Samuel and Susanna's other son's, John, Calvin and Samuel, who were all born in the 1760s. It could be that one of them had a son, William. It would be good to try to fill in information about these other three sons. I got the above information from my cousins who no longer has references as to where they got their information. They seem to have definite birth dates so it could be documented someplace. I have tried to tie these Pughs in with Pughs that settled in Capon Valley, Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia). My earliest PUGH ancestor was Samuel PUGH. What we know about him is that he was born ca 1736 and that he married Susanna about 1759. By 1761, when their second child was born, they were in Franklin Co., VA. Some researchers believe that Samuel was of Welsh parents from Pennsylvania and that they moved about 1740 settling in Grassy Creek, (Ashe Co.), NC. Some researchers think that Susanna's maiden name was CHAMBERLIN but there is no definite proof.

We know that Samuel PUGH and Susanna had the following children: John PUGH b. 7 Aug 1760; David PUGH b. 29 Dec 1761 in Franklin Co., VA; Calvin PUGH b. 24 Dec 1762; Sarah PUGH b. 14 Feb 1764; Mary PUGH b. 14 Feb 1766; Samuel PUGH b. 27 Oct 1768; and Drucie PUGH b. Apr ?

From the children listed above, David PUGH is my double 3GGrandfather. David was married to Sarah GREER. I descend through their son, Robert PUGH, who married Mary THOMAS in 1817 and through their daughter, Violet (Mary) PUGH, who married William THOMAS in 1809. I am related to the GREERs and the THOMASes many times over as cousins married cousins.

My great-grandfather, Robert T. PUGH was born in 1840 in Grassy Creek, Grayson Co., VA. He was married to Serilda J. THOMAS also born in Grayson. My great-grandparents moved to Missouri in about 1870. That is where my grandfather and my dad were born. Robert's father was also named Robert PUGH and he was born in 1795 in Grayson. This Robert PUGH also married a THOMAS. I have lots of THOMASes in my ancestry.

David Pugh's first child was William Pugh b. 11 Feb 1785 and d. 27 Nov 1837. He married Lucy Anderson on 18 Apr. 1820.

I have tried to tie these Pughs in with Pughs that settled in Capon Valley, Hampshire County, Virginia (now West VA). See if your library has a book called Capon Valley Its Pioneers and Their Descendants, 1698 to 1940 by Maud Pugh. I have copies of some of the pages of this book but not all. It is a little hard to find information in it because it does not have an index.

Let me know if I can help in any way. Sincerely, Daniela
