James:
See my reply to Stephen on posting # 112. I wonder how James Prout who md. Annie Ring is connected to the Prout's of Cape Breton or Prince Edward Island - or is he ? My strong suspicion is that he was a military person stationed by England in Halifax or in southern NS across from New England around 1865.
This might have been a reaction to the American Civil War (1861-1865), or to raids during 1866 across the American-Canadian border between Maine and New Brunswick by Irish Fenians who were trying to convince the "Canadian colonists" to join the USA (they remained unconvinced). This would have been just before the formation of the Dominion of Canada in July 1867. Canadians had been shocked by the Civil War and since 1864 they were planning to create their own country (but still under England's authority) to avoid the takeover by America. Even 85-90 years after the American Revolution, many family stories reminded them how they fled the USA to remain loyal to England.
As I mentioned to Stephen, please REPLY HERE since I CANNOT RECEIVE E-MAIL AT MY VERY BUSY OFFICE.
