Christie William Protsman, b. 1793 in VA, is the father of John Wesley Protsman (Prottsman). John Wesley Prottsman is the ancestor who started the Prottsman spelling. He was born in Ohio in 1833 and died in Iowa in 1905. After he came to Iowa he began spelling his name Prottsman and his descendants continued that tradition. John Wesley's brother, Charles Augustus Protsman, came to Iowa with him but never spelled his name with two t's. Charles Augustus returned to Urbana, Ohio eventually and died there in 1911. John Wesley's father, William, moved to Athens county, Ohio within two years of his father's death. William is married in Athens county, Ohio in 1825. He moved to Champaign county, Ohio about 1830 and died their a very prosperous farmer in 1864. Seven of his eight children were definitely born in Champaign county. The big name change speller was William's father, Johan Lorenz (Lawrence) Protsman. He was born Johan Lorenz Protzmann. He was born in York county, Pennsylvania in 1751. By the time he joined the Maryland Militia from Frederick county, in 1775, he was spelling his name Protzman. It is about 1810 when his name begins to show up on deed and tax records as Protsman. He moves to Marietta, Ohio by the time of the War of 1812 and he and his family members are using Protsman regularly. The Marietta newspaper, the "American Friend", records his death in 1823 calling him Lorenzo Protsman. Lawrence's father, Johann Ludwig Protzmann, b. 1718 in Witgenborn, Germany, is the first in our line to come to America in 1750. However, his younger brother, Lorenz Protzmann, b. 1721 in Witgenborn, Germany, was the first family member to come to America in 1743. He was also the first to move to Frederick county, Maryland. And unfortunately for him, he was the first to die. Lorenz died in 1767 and Johann Ludwig in 1778. These two brothers were two of nine known children of Johann Peter Protzmann, 1668-1744, and Gertrud Koch, abt 1682-1724. Hope that helps. Remember, the regular spelling of Prottsman did not start until about 1866-67. Your Cousin, Leo
