I am delighted to at last see a Probert forum. My grandfather was Richard A. Probert who was married to Lucy Kimball (I have LOTS on the Kimball line going back to the 1300's). My great-grandfather was Richard Probert, born May 12, 1824 in Muirskirk, Scotland. He was married to Mary Longmuir. Richard's parents were William Probert and Janet Jamison. Mary Longmuir's parents were William Longmuir and Marion Patterson.
My great-great grandfather was William Probert who married Janet Jamieson.
My great-great-great grandfather was also named William Probert and he married Isobel Mowbrey (several variations of spelling of Mowbrey) on November 6, 1789 in Cramond, Midlothian County, Scotland. They later left the parish of Cramond to live in Muirkirk, Ayr County.
William's father was James Probert.
In spite of the Scotch residences, the Proberts actually came originally from Wales. Probert is Welsh (from ap Robert, son of Robert). The Proberts came to Ayrshire during the Industrial Revolution, possibly in connection with the coal mining industry. Later Proberts were skilled ironworkers.
Historically, Probert is the name of a Welsh family said to be directly descended from Ynyr, King of Gwent. A grandson was Thomas Probert who died in 1536.
My line of Proberts eventually came to settle in Northeast Iowa. Does any of this tie in with anyone's lines??
THANKS! Jean (Probert) Faust
