Dear Debbie,

You have more information on the Previlles' than I have. I got most of my information from my mother, who was born in Rutland, Vt in 1917. She barely remembers Adelle Matte Preville. Mother said that Adele was born in Grand Isle. I don't know if that's Quebec or Vermont.

If I did my math right Adele Matte was quite young when she married Oliver Preville, who was much older. Mother seems to recall that they may have been an arranged marriage.

Mother did tell me that the Previlles' came from Britanny in the 1100's initially. The name was Prendeuille. The spelling might not be correct. They then went to England, although I don't know when. From there they went to Quebec; again I don't know when. I've also started reading the French Forum and English Forum. I haven't found anything about the Previlles' yet. You might want to check them out.

I have a copy of Henry Preville's application for a social security card. He listed his parents as Oliver Preville and Adele Matte. Your information on the Preville is the same as Mother told me. I didn't realize that there were a total of 9 children. Mother did tell me that Joseph Preville was a drunk. I don't know which Joseph she was referring to.

A couple of days ago,I found a forum board for the Mattes. J. Matte Stergios (female) has a lot of information about the Mattes.

I also discovered that 2 male Mattes, one from Canada and another from New England, had their Y-chromosome DNA tested. They are both related genetically. The Mattes appeared in Quebec in the 1600's. Prior to that the Matte ancesry came from Scandanavia, Scotland, and Ireland by way of Greenland and Iceland. You can probably find this same info by going to the Matte Forum.

I use the Mormon database, www.familysearch.org, for my information. I've found virtually nothing on the Previlles'. Most of my information is my early memories of my great-grandparents and my mother.

I haven't lived in Rutland, Vt since the mid-1950's. I live in Albuquerque, NM. I'm taking a trip to Ireland to see the old sod. Two branches of my family are from there. Upon my return, I'll be spending 2-3 days in Rutland. If you live anywhere near there, perhaps we can talk. The only Previlles' I know are descendents of Henry Preville.

Sincerely,

Su Troy
