Marsha:
We have probably exchanged information in the past. But tonight I was again looking at "Preston" and discovered an error.
I am a descendant of LewisSmith and Serepta Preston.
Serepta Preson did NOT marry Hiriam Stout. Serepta was pregnant & Hiriam applied to marry her, but apparently she turned him down. The "application" was witnessed by Reuben Preston. (We have been trying to find out if Reuben was Serepta's brother.)
In November 1830, Lewis Smith applied to marry Serepta Preston. Their first child was born in January 1831 (two months following their marriage!)
Lewis & Serepta (Preston) Smith left Delaware County, IN, in 1857 for Le Sueur County, MN.
With the Sioux Uprising in the Minnesota River Valley in August 1862, Lewis returned his family to Delaware County, IN. Yes, they did return to Minnesota in 1866 where they later died.
This is off the top of my head, but I can give you exact dates if you are interested.
For many years I have seen that Horace Preston died in 1828 in Washinton County, OH. But the Washington County Genealogical Society can not find any information on him. But they did send me a copy of that 1840 Bloom Township, Morgan, OH, census and questioned if this was the same "Horace" Preston!
Serepta was a popular name in the Preston family. I have more information on them too.
