I thought we had 'talked' before.Glad I could add something new to your mystery Preston line.
I put on my thinking cap and tried to identify a husband for Elizabeth Preston on the 1850 census. If you use Ancestry.com; At the search page just put in Prest* and North Carolina, nothing else. Results page will come up. I found the NC marriage bonds this way.Once you bring Marriage Bonds up, use Prest* (just incase extracted as Prestin) then for county, run one on Forsyth Co & another on Stokes Co.Remember Sheppard Preston, s/o this Elizabeth, was married in Stokes Co. This offered many clues.
Found many Preston marriages in the 1845 time frame.I am betting these are the first born kids of Elizabeth or maybe the children of his husband's brothers.Remember the Osborn kid in Elizabeth's 1850 h/h, Nancy Preston md William Osborn 08 apr 1845 in Stokes Co, NC. Ofcourse thats not proof its her daughter, could be a child of a niece.
I think you can eliminate Allen Preston as the father. Allen Preston is still alive on the 1850 census (see below). That person must have taken it off the marriage record for Sheppard (they only child he had listed for Allen). But it does not say Allen is the father BUT the bondsman.
Instead I think Allen, John & Nathaniel Preston might have been brothers from VA and settled in NC.Stay with me for awhile on this.Nathanial or Nathan Preston never shows up on any of these 1845 marriages as wittness or bondsman. But Allen does.Probably because Nathaniel Preston is dead by then?? With both John & Allen bn in the 1780's and living in the same place as Nathaniel, its hard to say which kid is whos on these marriage records. Without seeing the marriage bond itself. That would clarify things alot.
Anyway, I found a marriage record for a Nathaniel Preston to Betsey Cook 17 May 1823 in Stokes Co, NC.Allen Preston was bondsman.Betsey/Elizabeth its a possible.
Going with this, I searched the 1840 & 1850 census again.Very interesting.
1840 NC, Tyrrell,
Nathaniel Preston
Allen Preston
John Preston
1850 NC, Forsyth Co
*NO NATHANIEL*
Allen Prestonbn 1783VA pg 312
John Prestonbn 1780VA312
Elizabeth Preston (*no husband) bn 1805pg 311
Sheppard Preston (proven s/o Elizabeth) bn 1825/26 pg 311
Heston Preston bn 1815NCpg 289
(Heston shows up often as Bondsman on the Preston 1845 marriages)Just dont know if he is the s/o Allen, John, or Nathaniel. Heston Preston md Nancy Linville 21 may 1845 in Stokes Co, NC. Thomas H. Parish bondsman. This Thomas Parrish md a Preston also in 1845.
You will need to check the 1840 NC, Tyrrell Co on Nathaniel Preston to see if his age would make him a possible to be a son OR brother to the Allen & John bn in the 1780's. With luck, Nathaniels age will support brother. If son, that makes it harder; he could be either Allen or John's son.
BEWARE*
Ancestry.com has really goofed up their military record search.American Civil War Soldiers, Civil War Pension & Civil War Soldiers databases dont come up anymore on the general search.Other Military things do but not these three.Sooooooo, to search them you have to go to each database and do a search. On the home page, on the far right side of the page is Census, Birth & Death, Newspapers, ETC. Go to down to Military Records and click on this heading. Now go down towards the bottom of this new page and you will see all the Military databases.Find the American Civil War Soldiers, click on that. Then go to the very bottom and click on GO.NOW you can do a search.Use Prest* and nothing else.Once you get the choices, at the bottom of the page, you can select North Carolina. You will see all the Preston men I mentioned.Told you that they really goofed it up.Use to be able to just put a name on the main search page and these databases would automatically come up.No more.
Hope some of this helps.Looks like you have ran into a Preston line nobody has documented yet.If Nathaniel Preston died before 1850 that is probably why.Hope it all fits for your line.
Good luck,
Marsha
