Hi Glenn!
I would be interested in knowing the information in your book of marriages concerning the Prestons in Chittenden County, VT. I am descended from John Preston born 1745 in CT and who settled in Bolton VT, dying there about1820. His son, John, moved to Lenawee County, MI and is found listed as a voter (MI Territorial Papers) in 1824. He also bought land there.
I have deeds from Bolton, which show John sold his property there in August of 1813, stating that it was the property "on which I now live". He also signed a quitclaim in 1823 to his brother, Noah for his portion of his father's estate pending the death of his mother, Lydia.
The MI Preston cousins maintain that John spent time in Perry, Genesee County, NY and that his younger son, Samuel was born there in 1812, Since the census records showing Samuel from 1840-1880 show differing ages and places of birth (NY & VT) I cannot say for certain that John was in NY that early. It also is said that he arrived in MI in 1819. I cannot prove that either.
The 1830 and 1840 census for John in MI shows a female born 1760-1770. The census for 1850 and 1860 show John's wife, Eunice, as being born 1774. I also have a deed for a land sale in Monroe County, MI, where John signs with
a Susannah Preston. I would love to know her maiden name.
So, we seem to have at least two wives for John and if he would turn out to be the John Preston on the 1820 Perry, NY census there may well be a third wife.
I'm looking for anything that might shed some light on the 1813-1824 time period for John Preston. The Prestons, Algers and Stockwells were thick as thieves in VT, marrying each other and buying and selling land to each other and witnessing each other's deeds. I have nearly all the early deeds for these families in Chittenden County.
Could you tell me what might be in this book that would refer to this group?
There are also a couple of other names of interest, William Booth and the Ray and Rector families. I realize the book covers a later time period but there may be some clues and I would be most appreciative. If there is any information that I might be able to share with you I would be most happy to do so.
