MY Preble Family (My great mystery)

I am frustrated and have hit a brick wall in my family tree research. My Father was Richard L Preble, adoptive son of Charles Dana Preble, and I have no names of prebles beyond that and can't find a thing. I was given a clue that my family acestors first setteled in American in York, Maine but that is all I have. Can anyone help?
