I looked at the other message concerning a library, and was surprised to find that it is a different one. I live in Maryland and have always heard of this library, and did a little research there a few years ago. There is probably a site with more up-to-date information, but I will enter this from a book I have on Driving Tours in Maryland, 1975:
"Enoch Pratt came to Baltimore from Massachusetts in 1831 and founded a prosperous ironworks. In 1882 he founded the Enoch Pratt Free Library, which he donated to the people of Baltimore as a gift. He served as president of the board of trustees and visited the library daily. The present building (1975) was erected in 1933. It now has 27 branches, a million volumes and several collections, including those of Poe and H.L. Mencken."
