In researching my Prater line (Jonathan & Elizabeth Musick) brother of Archibald, I've become convinced that their parents are William Prather and Sarah Prather. William son of Jonathan Prather and Jane Mullikin. Sarah daughter of William Prather and Anne Yates of Maryland. They were cousins. This is basically circumstantial, Which is where I need your help. Anyone have any records for a William in these times/locations? I first looked at the Thomas and Joyce Allen theory. Not them for sure. Then I looked into the Jonathan and Elizabeth Cresap theory. Not them either. I found no indication that Jonathan/Cresap ever left Pennsylvania. What I have found is that in Lunenburg, Va, around 1748, there are three Prathers who appear to be the sons of Jonathan Prather and Jane Mullikin. William, Thomas, Jonathan and in the same neighborhood is James (son of the Thomas who married Joyce). Four men from the same family in the same area. James' father Thomas would be the threes uncle, brother to Jonathan. In 1742 William and Sarah sold their properties in Prince George county. In 1748, William shows up in Lunenburg with Thomas. (There is a Newman family near them throughout their history in Va) 1749 Jonathan makes an appearance In 1752 and 1754 Lunenburg county is split up, new counties formed are Bedford and Halifax. These men are in the same area, just the county name changes. Jonathan, Thomas and James are now in Bedford. William is now in Halifax/Pittsylvania county. Pittsylvania county forms 1767 from Halifax. 1758 Nehemiah and Ningum are on Hening's statues as privates in the Halifax militia. The early militia drafted men from the age of 15. A ballpark birthdate for these two using 15 is 1743. I'm sure one is a little older than the other, giving a rough birthdate of at least 1740 to 1743. William and Sarah married January 5, 1738/39 Prince George county. Their children would begin being born in 1740 or so. When Pittsylvania county formed 1767, these two (Nehemiah and Ninian) are tithed in Peter Copelands district. William makes a reappearance on the 1768 list, and is involved in a court case with Israel Christian. (I'm pretty sure Ninian/Ningum is really named Newman, I'll get to that in a moment). Again, the people didn't move, the name of the county changed. In 1776 Henry county is formed from Pittsylvania. Now in addition to Nehemiah and Ninian, other names start popping up as the males reached majority and began to be taxed. Now we also have Archibald and Jonathan. This is also approaching the point where I suspect that William and or Sarah may have died, as the children start moving away. Thomas is in in Washington county, where he marries Milly Wheeler 1778. I descend from Newman Prater in Floyd county, Ky, son of William and Obedience, so this was a big lead for me. 1782 Newman Prater is granted 185 acres in Montgomery county, Va on Greasy Creek, Burks Fork. Newman Prater 185 acres Montgomery County. James Monroe Esquire Governor of the commonwealth of Virginia. To all to whom these presents shall come Greeting. Know ye that by virtue of a land office Treasury Warrant Number Eleven Thousand Two hundred and ninety Issued the eighth day of March, Seventeen hundred and eighty two. There is Granted by the said Commonwealth unto Newman Prather Heir at Law of Newman Prather dec'd Assignee of Richard Stegale a Certain tract or Parcel of land containing one hundred eighty five acres by survey bearing date the Twenty first day of November One Thousand seven hundred and Ninety lying and being in the County of Montgomery on the head waters of Greasy Creek and Burks fork Branches of New River. As you can see from the deed there where two Newman Prathers, the younger inherited the land. Now, in Logan county there is a history with a bio of the prather family that relocated there: LANFORD PRATER, in Logan Co. Ohio, McArthur Township. Page 827. Book titled LOGAN COUNTY OHIO. "LANFORD PRATER, physician and surgeon; Huntsville; was born Aug. 1, 1840, in this county and is a descendant of one of the early settlers; his grandfather, Newman Prater, was born in Virginia in 1745, and was there married to Nancy Robinson; he was a farmer by occupation, and although an old man, served in the war of 1812, receiving injuries from which he died; the family, which then consisted of wife and six children, soon after started for this State, moving all the way on pack-horses, and four of them were obliged to walk the whole distance; they settled permanently in this county and the sons went to work for different parties, in order to support the family; John, the youngest but one, was born Jan. 1, 1800, and has always been a tiller of the soil; he married to Mary Pope, who was a native of North Carolina, and came to this State the same year as the Prater family, and lived five years in Highland Co. before coming here; he retired from the farm in 1876 and has since lived with his son, losing his earthly partner Feb. 4, 1880. Lanford taught school several terms....." (my note: I think they mixed up the Newmans, the younger married nancy Robinson0 From this we see that a Newman Prater was born about 1745- perfect fit for the Ninian Prater with Nehemiah. Newman the younger named children Nehemiah, Archibald, and is found in the same vincinity as Nehemiah, Archibald and the rest. He was born between 1765 and 1784. Ninian is apparently still alive in 1790, as he appears on the Henry county tax list. He has died by 1800 as that is when Newman inherits the land. Patrick county forms in 1790 from Henry county. In 1791 Newman is on the Patrick tax list. By 1800 Newman is in Montgomery county along with a William, and in 1807 he sells the land, dying in Grayson county, Va. His son Archibald marries in Patrick county 1816. Nehemiah is granted 175 acres of land in Henry county in 1784. I have not found much else about him. one thing is for certain, where ever one went the others showed up sooner or later. Henry/patrick county- nehemiah, ninian, archibald, jonathan, newman, sarah, Isaac (may be cousin, son of Jonathan of Bedford county) montgomery county- newman, Isaac, William, Archibald washington county- Thomas, Archibald, William, Jonathan, sarah Russell county- Archibald, William, Jonathan, Isaac 1760 Jonathan of Bedford patents land on goose creek, in 1787 Nehemiah, Archibald, and William are members of the goose creek church. this is getting long and I'm losing my train of thought. one last thing. If William and Sarah are their parents, I'd expect to find the names William (father), Sarah (mother), Jonathan (grandfather, uncle, brother), Jane (grandmother), Thomas (numerous), John (uncles), James (cousin in Bedford), running throughout. names of their children: Archibald- William, Sarah "Sally", James, John, Thomas, Jonathan- William, James, Jonathan, Thomas Thomas- William, Sarah Sarah- William Ninian/Newman- may have son William as one in Montgomery 1806 Nehemiah- know nothing further William- know nothing further So any help would be appreciated. If I'm on the wrong track show me how. thanks Notify Administrator about this message?
