George Clark and Mary POWLEY in Kingston, Ontario
I started working on a Clark family yesterday and wanted to post this info in the hope it will help someone. At the very least it will resurrect a man that people have widely posted as having died in 1849 who lived at least until 1891. That man is George Clark born about 1817 who married Mary Powley in Kingston, Ontario on July 23, 1844. Mary Powley was born Jan. 30 1825 and was the daughter of Jacob Powley and Mary David, according to other researchers' postings.
George Clark and Mary are on the 1861 census at Kingston Ontario with their three known children, and on the same page as George's parents and known siblings:
1861 Kingston:
George Clark age 44Farmer born in UC
Mary Clark age 32 born UC
Jacob Clark age 16 born UC
Sarah Clark age 14 born UC
Eliza J. Clark age 12 born UC
David Clark born UC age 24
Andrew Clark born Ireland age 71
Sarah Clark age 70 born Ireland
Matilda Clark age 26
Andrew Clark age 43
Martha age 38
John W. age 17
Robert H. age 14
Charles E. age 12
Elvira (?) age 10
Sarah E. age 8
Martha age 6
Clementine age 2
I found Andrew and Sarah Ann in 1851 Kingston, and their children David, Matilda and Andrew junior. No sign of George and Mary, and I have hunted high and low in 1851 and cannot find them. They should be in Kingston. Anyone?
David Henry Clark born 1837 married Ellen Esther Simonite (?) and had at least ten children. They lived at Orillia, Simcoe County, Ont. David died in 1895.
Andrew Clark junior and his wife Martha Ashley lived at Loughborough, Ontario and had at least ten children. Andrew died in 1900.
Matilda married David Milsap in 1858 and lived in Lennox and Addington County. Have not worked on their family but at least three children. Matilda died in 1897.
I suspect that the Mary Ann Clark born 1815 who married Jacob Huffman Powley in 1834 was also a daughter of Andrew Clark senior and his wife Sarah Ann. This Mary Ann died 1893 in Simcoe County.
Another son was George C. Clark born abt 1817, who married Mary Powley. Mary died in 1862. Everyone posts that George died in 1849. He did not. He also moved to Simcoe County. When his daughter Rubertha got married in 1870 to William Tudhope, this was stated:
8/219 William TUDHOPE, 25, Oro, Orillia, Merchant, s/o George & Janet TUDHOPE (nee RUTHERFORD), married Rubertha Eliza Jane CLARKE, 21, Kingston, Orillia, d/o George CLARKE (mother dead), wtn: Matilda POWLEY of Marchmont & Jacob Cumberland CLARKE of Gravenhurst, on September 15, 1870, at House of George Clarke, Orillia
That last bit gave me the clue the man was still alive. He had re-married after his first wife died to Adelaide Blake of Loughborough, daughter of Israel and Martha- no doubt George met her while visiting his brother Andrew in Loughborough:

George and Adelaide had one son George E. Clark who was alive in Gravenhurst Ontario in 1891 with his parents but I cannot find him after that. Adelaide died on March 5, 1894 at Gravenhurst. I do not know what happened to George after 1891- it is possible he went back to Kingston, but I have not found a death reg. which would confirm his identity.

From his first marriage to Mary Powley, George had three children:
Jacob Cumberland Clark born April 1 1845, married Marion McPhie, had four known children, died at Gravenhurst June 15, 1903.
Sarah Clark born 1847, supposedly died Jan 8 1863 at Waterloo?Would like to know the source for that date.
Rubertha Eliza Jane Clark born 1849, married William Tudhope, died at Toronto Sept. 13, 1919. Four children.
No one knows the maiden name of Andrew Clark senior's wife Sarah Ann, but it MIGHT be Cumberland, as this was a given name in the family.
If anyone has further info, or wants this Clark file, please let me know.
Thanks from Nora
