Mary Ellen Powers was the youngest daughter of David A Powers and Susan Lilly of Washington VA and Johnson/Floyd KY. (1860 census Johnson KY). Susan died in the 1860's and Mary stayed with relatives. In 1870 census she was in the Lilly HH in KY. In 1878 David A Powers married Eliza Fortune White in Floyd KY and returned to Washington VA for the 1880 census. In 1892, David and Eliza returned to Boyd KY where David died in 1911.
In the 1880 census, Mary Ellen is in the HH of James K Polk Musick and her sister Susan Catherine Powers Polk.
Mary Ellen Powers was the 2nd wife of George W Shell who had been sent by the widow Rhoda Musick Shell, wife of Aaron Shell, of Washington and Russell VA when the estate of John Wes Musick/Isabella Harris was settled in KY.
Rhoda Musick Shell was daughter of John Wes Musick/Isabella Harris and James K Polk Musick was the illegitimate son of Rhoda's sister Mary "Polly" Musick.
David A Powers was the son of Henry Powers and Sarah/Sally Goble of Washington VA. Sarah/Sally was the daughter of Isaac Gobble and Eliza Musick, sister to John Wes Musick/ Isabella Harris. So the Powers and the "KY" Musicks go back to early 1800's. The 1850 census of Russell VA lists these Powers families (David's and Henry's) as "Bowers" by error.
Henry Powers born apx 1806 was the son of Peter Powers and Elizabeth unknown of Wythe (1790), Grayson (1792), Russell (1803) and by 1827 Washington VA. Peter Powers born apx 1762 was probably one of the sons of David and Mary Unknown Powers of Montgomery and Grayson VA.
I found a death certificate for Mary Ellen Shell listed in either KY deaths or Ohio deaths under a strange spelling. Don't have my files with me. Sorry.
