I've been stuck here for years, and thought I'd check with everyone on this list--
I'm researching the Powell family from Mercer Co., (northern) Missouri:
James Powell was born in Ohio ca. 1825, where he married Hannah (maiden name unknown, also born in Ohio). Their son Isaac (1845-1927) was supposed to have been born in Columbus, Ohio, but the family had moved to Appanoose Co., Iowa by the 1850 Census (also listed are two sisters of Isaac: Hannah J., born in Ohio ca. 1847, and Margaret, born in Iowa ca. 1849). They lived there until Hannah (the mother) died (this was sometime during the 1850s-- I assume she was buried in Appanoose Co., Iowa), and then the family moved to Mercer Co., Missouri (Ravanna Twp).
In the 1860 Census Isaac Powell (the son) appears in the household of Robert and Mary Southers-- and I have no idea what happened to his father James or his sisters. In April 1870 Isaac married Robert and Mary's daughter, Loretta D. Southers (1851-1910), who was first cousin to Calamity Jane (Martha Jane Canary). I am interested in any information on this family or its various branches.
I have no idea who James Powell's parents were-- there seem to have been other Powells already in Mercer Co. (and in the immediate area) when he arrived, but I do not know if they are connected-- and I think these Powells came from Kentucky or Tennessee rather than Ohio (but they could still be cousins of James).
There are also other Powells (and this time from Ohio) appearing earlier in the 1850 census around the family when they lived in Appanoose Co., Iowa. There *is* a James buried next to Isaac in the Salem Cemetery, Mercer Co., Missouri, but the dates don't quite match up (plus this James died in 1895, so where was he in the 1860 Census, and why was his son enumerated with the Southers?). I don't know if this James is Isaac's father or not...
Other related names of Mercer Co., Missouri include:
Canary, Evans, Pickett, Robinson, Smith, Southers, Sowers (Sauer), Vanderpool, Wilson
Does any of this ring a bell for anyone? Please don't hesitate to contact me if you think we have a connection-- this branch of the family is almost a complete mystery to me...
Thanks in advance!
Robert J. Powell
