Shelby - hi. Have you found out anything about your Powell ancestors? I may have information on Nancy Powell, wife of Elijah. I think she may be Nancy Wright, daughter of Richard Wright, Jr. and Nancy Morgan, of Rowan County, NC. I prepared the following as a basis of reasoning --

The Case for Nancy Wright [Powell]

I’ve been researching ALL of my ancestor's [Richard Wright, Jr.’s] twenty-four [24] children – by both marriages. I have one last child, from Richard’s marriage to Nancy Morgan, that I have not reconciled – Nancy Wright who married a ‘Mr. Powell’.

“Mr. Powell” has never been identified by a first name, nor has any marriage date found. Based on various censuses and other information I’ve found in the past, Nancy appears to have been born in Rowan County, abt 1795. The only information found on several websites is that she married “Mr. Powell”, and lived in Iredell County, NC.

Recent information discovered leads me to another Powell – that of Elijah Powell of Iredell County, NC.
Elijah Powell
Birth 7 Mar 1797 in Randolph County, NC
Death 18 Feb 1889 in Iredell County, NC

Iredell County was the last place that Nancy Wright Powell was found, but no children was mentioned at that time. Subsequent research reveals 6 children and the following information:

Mr. Elijah Powell’s wife’s name was ‘Nancy’, but no surname is indicated. Information posted on ROOTSWEB, by those who are believed to be descendants or related in some way, indicate that Elijah's wife's name was Nancy, but no surname was given. To them, her maiden name is unknown; however, this Nancy and Elijah had children whose names run in 'my' Wright family

I’d like you to consider the following --
Nancy Wright - Birth 1795 in Rowan County, NC
Death Abt 1879 in Iredell County, NC

Husband - Elijah Powell 1797 – 18 Feb 1889 in Irdell County, North Carolina

Elijah Powell Obituary

Mr Elijah Powell died at his home in Eagle Mills township Monday morning, the 18th inst, he was one of the old landmarks of this township. He would have been 93 years old the 7th of March [1889]. His wife [Nancy] died about 10 years ago. He raised a family of 7 children of whom ony two survive him. viz; E H Powell, of this county, and Cenith [Cecelia] Spencer, of Randolph County. Two of his sons fell in the late war [Civil War?] and he had them brought home and buried in the family graveyard. He was born and raised in Randolph county and moved to this county about 45 years ago. He was a good neighbor and citizen. He leaves two children, a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren to mourn his loss. peace be to his ashes." The information in [ ] is my own insertion to clarify information.

Elijah and Nancy's children were --

* Sarah "Polly" Powell 1821 – 1883 -
* Elias H Powell 1830 – survived his father [information from father's obit] - 1915
* Henry B Powell - 10 Apr 1835 - 18 Nov 1858
* Cecelia J Powell 1833 – married a Spencer [information from father's obit], but I have been unsuccessful in locating further information on her.
* Joseph G Powell 1838 – 1865 – died in Civil War
* Reuben R Powell 1841 – 1865 - died in Civil War

Nancy Wright’s sibling’s names also translated over to her own children; i.e., Sarah, Cecelia and Reuben.

Then, there is the information on Elias Powell’s death certificate - his mother's name is shown as NANCY WHIGHT - a possible misspelling or misinterpretation for WRIGHT.

I recently received a copy of "Iredell County North Carolina Cemeteries ABANDONED CEMETERIES Volume Four Southeast, page 202" that shows the Powell Family Cemetery in Eagle Mills Township. Approximately 15 people are shown as being buried there. If you would like to have a copy, please let me know and where to email it.

I realize all this is circumstantial at best, but the birth date, place, family names, etc, seem to lead to the probability of her being Richard Wright and Nancy Morgan’s daughter.

Regards,
Shirley
