Lucinda died in Chickasaw Co. and is buried at Amity Baptist Church. I got her death certificate but there was no information about her parents. The informant was someone named Terry (last name). There was a newspaper article in the Calhoun City newspaper saying that Rev. James Powell was going to visit his mother, Lucinda Powell, who was ill and believed to be "the oldest white woman in Chickasaw County." The article said that he had come into the post office to see about mail from his twin sons who had gone to New Mexico.

Pearl was born in November 1879, so she should have been on the 1880 census with someone. Her mother died first, and then her father, both before she was old enough to go to school. I have heard various accounts of this. Unfortunately, all of my mother's siblings, as well as Mother, are dead now. Pearl had a distant cousin, Daisy Hauser, and I talked to her daughter, Iota Verrell some years ago. I have not been able to figure out the relationship there. Pearl was an only child.

Thank you so much! I don't know why I didn't go to Clay Co. looking for them. From the records you found, Pearl's birthdate does not agree. I will look some more.

Iota told me that "Aunt Lou" went wherever she was needed to nurse the sick or to help out, and that she took Pearl with her. My mother remembers Lucinda as a little bent over woman who knitted them mittens and scolded them a lot.
