From all the information you have contributed I've been able to get one more step in my search .......
You are right ...... Captain William Powell WAS NOT KILLED BY INDIANS ...... He did die of disease .......
Now as to my original question about TWO WILLIAM POWELLs... I'm still coming up with this:
1. The Captain William Powell mentioned above who arrived in May 1610 with the Sea Venture Survivors. ... a little note here.... on that Sea Venture passenger list he is called "William Powell, Gentleman" .... an he arrived after the departure in September 1609 of John Smith.....
NOW THE OTHER WILLIAM POWELL who was in Virginia before the arrival of the Sea Venture survivors .......
John Smith in his "Historie" said this:
" . . . There were divers other of better reason and experience, that from their first landing, hearing the generall good report of his old Souldiers, and seeing with their eyes his actions so well mannaged with discretion, as Captaine WOOD, Captaine WEBBE, Cap. MOONE, Captaine FITZ JAMES, Master William POWELL, Master PARTRIDGE, Master WHITE, and divers others, when they perceiued the malice of RATLIFFE and ARCHER, and their faction, left their companies, and ever rested his faithfull friends. . . . "
He is talking about the Captains of the Third Supply who arrived the previous month. This William Powell was referred to in a couple of other references besides John Smith's......
Was this William Powell a Master Tradesman? or maybe a Ship's MASTER ...... He is certainly there in Virginia before the Sea Venture comes in May 1610.
