My grandmother's name was Mary L. Powell (later married Charles W. Shipley of Baltimore) My grandmother's history is a bit of blur as to her background.
What we know of her is that she was raised on a small plantation in Virginia (possibly Richmond), her father was a police officer for the Railroad. She had a brother named Robert Powell and we also believe that was her father's name. Her mother's name escapes me as of now. I know she had a mamie growing up. Her father was known for shooting a criminal that was being transported on the railroad which she and her brother and mother witnessed when going to meet him one day at work. Her father died of (throat cancer) and her mother died at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore some time later of similar cancer (we belive it was thyroid for both). My grandmother was then sent to an orphanage with her brother for a short time before her mother's sister took them into an abusive home (she ran a brothel). Robert Jr. ran away but promised to return for my grandmother once he could afford to care for her, but she never saw him again she may have been 7 - 10 yrs old at the time. We have a few pictures of her family from her childhood, her mom etc. But I have little more to go on, since she has passed away. Is there any reference to any of the railroad information I have given or some place I can search (free sites) in an attempt to find out what happended to the family homestead, where they would have been buried etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as her last two living children would like to know about their mom and if in fact they have other living relations. Thank you and God Bless
