I haven't looked much forward beyond Catherine Pout who married James Olive in 1738. I am descended from the Olives and realised that if we were using Freeman of Canterbury records to fill in gaps in Olive chronology going forward, that you could do the same going backwards with Pouts. Obviously I also looked at microfilm of Camnterbury parish registers. Then it was merely a case of checking Canterbury marriage licences. I stumbled upon the Sandwich will. So I contacted Pamela Green who had a copy of the family tree. Tony Maxted also did a lot of researching. He comes originally from Kent and met up with Roger Turner.
I think there is a missing link between the James who died in 1625 and the John Pout who died in 1514. The will of the John Powte who died in 1554 mentions two sons, Robert and Lawrence, neither of whom mentioned a James in their will. Lawrence mentioned no children at all in 1598 and Robert in 1576 mentions minor children John, Robert, Magdalen, Susan and Sara. The timing doesn't fit.
So I think James was probably descended from someone mentioned in the 1514 will of John Powte which mentioned a son, Thomas and his sons John, William and Robert. John is accounted for. There is an administration for Thomas Powlte of Ash in 1548 given to his son, John (Archaeologia Cantiana, Vol 37). So that still leaves William and Robert.
There is a 1594 will (probate 1597) of Joane/Johnne Powte, widow of Ash whose legatees are her son, James, her daughter, Bennett and her grandaughter Thomasine Cowell, child of her daughter, Dennys. I think this is our James.
Anyway, given the state of the records of the time, the only way forward I can see is if land records eg the transfer of the farm at Weddington, exist.
