HI Sarah,
Fromwhat I can work out on the family tree Charles is Johns brother and Peter is Johns nephew. But the family tree is quite complicated so I could be wrong.I live also in Auckland in Half Moon Bay, so if you give me your fax number i can fax the family tree to you.
Mum says she can remember her mother (Isabelle Barrell nee Pottinger) talking about her uncle Charles and cousins including Peter who lived close by to her on the west coast.
John left the Shetlands in 1907 because of the little work available. He intended to go to Canada but on the way he was advised to go to NZ where the conditions were better. He first settled in central Otago then went back to the Shetlands in 1912 and married Margaret Thomson. He then returned to NZ and worked as a lighthouse keeper at various places untill 1919.He then settled on a farm at Waimangaroa, 10 miles from wesport where the family including my grandmother grew up.
