It occurs to me that I should also tell you that:
1.Present day Saratoga County is comprised of the following Albany County Tax Districts:
a) 1/2 of the Saratoga Tax District;
b) all of the Half Moon Tax District; and,
c) all of the Ballstown Tax District.
Between 1779 and 1790 both the Saratoga and Half Moon Tax Districts experienced a doubling of their respective populations.During the same time period the Ballstown Tax District experienced a 10 fold increase in its population.
2.Prepresent day Saratoga County, NY was created from of Albany County onFebruary 7, 1791.
3.The other half of the Saratoga Tax District was added to present day Washington County, NY on February 7, 1791.
The tax records indicate that there is one man named Joseph Potter living in the Half Moon Tax District of Albany County, NY in 1779 and another man named Joseph Potter living in the Saratoga Tax District of Albany County in 1779.From later Albany County tax lists it is evident that the Joseph Potter, who lived in Saratoga District in 1779, lived on the east side of the Hudson River, i.e. the area that became the Town of Easton, Washington County.
Charles Edward Potter's book, "The Genealogy of the Potter Families in America", shows that the Joseph Potter, who lived in Easton was the son of Nathaniel Potter and Mary Devol; married Dinah Gifford; and, did not have a son named Joseph, who would have been old enough to have been a taxpayer between 1779 and 1786.Relying on Quaker meeting records, one of my correspondents, who is descended from this line, states that Joseph and Dinah Gifford Potter did not have a son name Joseph at all.I am inclined to put more weight on the Quaker Meeting records than CEP's book.
In 1786, a second man named "Joseph Potter" appears on the Saratoga-West Tax List, while the Joseph Potter, who had been on the 1779 Half Moon Tax List, remains on the 1786 Half Moon Tax List.This means that there are two men named "Joseph Potter" living on the west side of the Hudson River in two different Albany County tax districts.Both of these Albany County tax districts became part of present day Saratoga County, NY.These two men may be father and son or they may not be.I have not looked into that matter.
I also looked at Charles Edward Potter's book and have determined that these two men, named Joseph Potter (who areliving on the west side of the Hudson River), do not appear to be descended from Nathaniel Potter of Portsmouth, RI (Part 8) according to CEP's book.Therefore I assume that these men are not closely related to Joseph Potter (Part 8, #27) of Easton.Although it should be noted that I have not investigated whether either the Half Moon District taxpayer or the Saratoga-West District taxpayer are descended from any of the other immigrant Potters in CEP's book.
I hope that that clarifies things for you.
P.S. if you go to the Swarthmore College Web site, you can access the records for the Monthly and Preparative Quaker meetings, which were supervised by the New York Yearly Meeting.It takes a while to get the hang of using the Friends' Historical Library's search engine, but it is worth the effort.
