John Churchill wrote in his Landmarks of Oswego County, NY , p. 497 that Asher Smith Potter, born Camden, NY 26 January 1805.When he was 5 years old his father moved to Canada where Asher was educated.When he was 18 they returned to Oneida Co., NY.About 1825 they removed from Oneida Co. toOswego co., NY where his father died, aged 83.Asher then spent 18 years in New York City and in the South.He settled at Cleveland, Oswego Co. where he opened a tavern and later a store.He held several public positions.He married Altay.They had 4 children.He died in March 1881.
According to the 1880 census for Cleveland Asher Potter, age 75, b. NY (both parents b. CT) living with wife, Altay, age 47 & Son, Silas Potter, age 14.There is another family in the household.They are called other, but they seem to be married daughter, Altay Knight, age 25 living with her husband, Charles Knight, age 32 & children: Edith Knight, age 3 & Arthur Knight, age 9 months.All b. NY.
