Hello
I doubt if my John Potter is connected to the former Archbishop of Canterbury. The family that John Potter Archbishop of Canterbury originated from was a family in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England. His father was Thomas Potter, a linen draper in the Market Place of Wakefield: from a quite humble background.I would not be at all surprised if one or more of the family of Thomas Potter, had relations over the border into Lancashire and indeed, there were Potter's in Lancashire that engaged in the same cloth business. One lived in a big mansion in Manchester area. Also in Manchester area there were Potter's who had made their fortune from the cloth industry. In Bolton, Lancashire, there was a hospital named after Edmund Potter, in fact it was his former home, which he donated as a hospital on retirement to the Lake District.
I probably don't have any personal connection to the family, although I am interested in the history of the family.
best wishes
David
